Rajasthan.

ASIA-PACIFIC/INDIA/26.5727° N, 73.8390° E

The hiss of mustard oil hitting a hot kadai cuts through the morning chill of the Thar desert. Across six hundred miles of scrub and sand, the landscape climbs from the dry dunes of Jaisalmer into the rocky Aravalli hills around Udaipur. It is a vast, proud territory run on slow-simmered lentils, hand-turned pottery, and sandstone forts that have weathered five centuries of siege without losing their dignity.

What to do in Rajasthan

India's largest state spans the arid Thar desert and the granite ridges of the Aravalli hills. Days here follow the rhythm of early temple bells, blistering midday heat, and evening chai in crowded market squares. It suits travellers who appreciate layered history, bold spice profiles, and the patience required to navigate long road links between royal towns.

When to go to Rajasthan

October to March brings clear, cool skies, daytime temperatures around 25°C, and lively evening bazaars. By April, the desert heats past 40°C, emptying the streets. The July to September monsoon brings brief downpours that turn the Aravallis green around Udaipur.

Getting around Rajasthan

Hiring a reliable car and driver is the most flexible way to cross rural routes. Express trains connect Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner efficiently in four to six hours. For long hauls like Udaipur to Jaisalmer, plan for an eight-hour drive or book a private sleeper coach.
