Ponderosa pine gives way to dry volcanic soil the moment you cross the crest of the Cascades. The Deschutes River cuts clear and cold through the center of town, flanked by converted timber mills and outdoor gear shops where everyone seems to own a fleece and a kayak. It began as a logging camp; today it runs on microbreweries, mountain bike singletrack, and relentless high-desert sunshine. We take our beer seriously here, perhaps too seriously. Bend is worth visiting if you want dry mountain trails by day and fresh pine-cone-heavy pale ales beside a river fire pit by night.

What to do in Bend Oregon United States

Days in Bend are dictated by the sun and the river. Mornings belong to the trails along Century Drive and the basalt walls of Smith Rock; afternoons drift naturally toward riverside taprooms and the Old Mill District. It suits travellers who prefer hiking boots to dress shoes, cold fresh-hop ales to white tablecloths, and dry high-desert air that cools rapidly once the sun drops behind Mount Bachelor.
