Big Sur sits along Highway 1, about thirty miles south of Monterey and a three-hour drive from San Francisco. The region is defined by ninety miles of wild coastline where the Santa Lucia Range plunges straight into the Pacific, flanked by old-growth redwood groves and sea fog. Cell service vanishes early, and services are sparse. Big Sur is worth visiting if you want to hike through coastal redwoods down to isolated Pacific coves and drive one of North America's most demanding coastal roads.

What to do in Big Sur California United States

Big Sur has no downtown. Life here is strung out along Highway 1, where days revolve around hiking coastal headlands, tracking changing fog banks, and finding dinner before dark. Expect narrow roads, scarce petrol stations, and zero mobile phone coverage. It suits independent travellers, walkers, and drivers who enjoy rugged landscape over resort comforts and do not mind packing sturdy boots and extra layers.
