Key Largo sits sixty miles south of Miami International Airport, roughly an hour down Highway 1 where the mainland marsh yields to open water. The island is known for its shallow barrier reef system and the mangrove backcountry of Florida Bay. Key Largo is worth visiting if you want to spend your mornings over living coral reefs and your afternoons eating blackened hogfish by the water. Look elsewhere if you expect wide natural sandy beaches, historic pedestrian centres, or late-night cocktail bars.
