Sitting eighty miles north of New York City, reachable in ninety minutes by car or direct Trailways bus, New Paltz is defined by two things: the world-class climbing on the Shawangunk Ridge and the seventeenth-century stone houses along Huguenot Street. It is a collegiate river town with serious trail access and unpretentious cider houses. New Paltz is worth visiting if you want to scramble along steep quartzite crags by morning and drink farm-pressed Hudson Valley cider beside stone hearths by late afternoon.
