The wake of the MS Dixie II thumps against the dock, sending cold mountain water over slick granite boulders. Highway 50 skirts the shore here on Tahoe's Nevada side, where Jeffrey pines drop thick cones onto dark sand and log cabins date back to the early timber days. It is less crowded than South Lake Tahoe across the state line, though you will still queue for boat fuel on a July weekend. Zephyr Cove is worth visiting if you want deep-water lake cruises, quiet sandy coves, and direct access to high-elevation Sierra hiking trails.
