Fernie sits in the Elk Valley of the Canadian Rockies, three and a half hours south of Calgary along Highway 3 or an hour east of Cranbrook Airport. Built on coal and sustained by massive winter snowfall, the town centres on turn-of-the-century brick storefronts along 2nd Avenue beneath the sheer limestone slab of Mount Hosmer. It is unpretentious, cold in January, and entirely dedicated to outdoor graft. Fernie is worth visiting if you want deep powder skiing without resort glitz and quiet trout rivers in July.

What to do in Fernie British Columbia Canada

Life in Fernie runs on the weather and the angle of the sun. The town layout is compact, centred on 2nd Avenue with its solid sandstone banks and working-class saloons. Mornings start early with gear bags and strong drip coffee, while afternoons shift to the Elk River banks or the ski lifts. It suits travellers who prefer wool layers over polished lobbies, clear mountain air, and evenings spent over honest plates of food.
