Jerada.

ORIENTAL/MOROCCO/34.3117° N, 2.1636° W

Jerada sits on a cold, high plateau sixty kilometres south of Oujda, framed by dark spoil tips from twentieth-century anthracite mines. You smell burning coal and roasting mutton before you see the town square. It is a working town with no postcard gloss. Miners still head out early, and by noon, street stalls along Boulevard Hassan II are fanning embers for spiced kefta and strong gunpowder tea loaded with fresh mint.
